Update on Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO Rezoning

Update 8/23/2015: Please see the subsequent post to the post below — the DOE has provided further guidance to the CEC that what will be delivered the week of 8/31 will not be the final proposal on which the CEC will be expected to vote, but rather a set of proposed scenarios (maps) to be reviewed for input.

As many of you are aware, the NYC Department of Education (DOE) has stated publicly that it has concluded that the zone size of PS 8 needs to be reduced. Accordingly, the CEC for District 13 is expecting a proposal from the DOE to rezone PS 8 to reduce its zoned area in the neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. We expect this rezoning to impact the school zones of PS 8 and PS 307.

The DOE has now informed the CEC that it is working toward a delivery date of the rezoning proposal to the CEC on August 31. The CEC had asked the DOE that the rezoning proposal be delivered by now.

As a CEC we are charged with representing the parents and children of District 13, and as such we share the concern of many parents about the very tight timeline prescribed by the DOE process. We will continue to press on the DOE to deliver this proposal as soon as possible. As soon as we have a proposal from the DOE we will share it with the D13 parent community and public at large via multiple channels, including the CEC13.org website.

Finally, please mark your calendars for CEC 13’s September calendar meeting, during which we expect discussion of the DOE rezoning proposal will be the primary topic. September 30th, 6pm at PS 307. Please see the CEC calendar for more info.
